Long Island Presidents' council announces finalists for eighth annual school essay contest (Massapequa Post) - The Long Island Presidents' Council, an association of teachers' union presidents, has selected finalists for their eighth annual School Essay Contest. This year's title was "Why I Like Going Back to School in September." The contest was open to Long Island students, kindergarten through 12th grade, from districts throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Long Island man charged with blowing up mailboxes in Sullivan County (Mid-Hudson News) - LIBERTY – State Police have arrested a Bellmore, Long Island man and charged him with using explosives to blow up several residential mailboxes and damaging residential and business windows in the Livingston Manor area during the past two weeks.

Home Invaders Hit Another Long Island House (FOX 5 New York) - Make that four violent home invasions in four weeks on Long Island. A group of men broke into a house in Mastic late Tuesday night. Annual Island Terrace Car Show Sept. 28 (Lakeville Call) - Island Terrace Nursing Home’s annual Fall Open House and Car Show will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28, rain or shine, on the grounds at 57 Long Point Road. It will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and tours through the nursing home, gardens and grounds will be offered.

Shark Sightings Keep Big Island Beaches Closed (KITV Honolulu) - Big Island lifeguards closed several beaches after spotting four tiger sharks measuring between 8- to 12-feet long.

Long Island Teen Killed In DWI Car Crash (WCBS-TV New York) - A Long Island man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after a 16-year-old passenger in his sport utility vehicle was killed in a crash. Police say 19-year-old Michael Ilvento was driving his SUV in Holtsville late Sunday night when he lost control and the vehicle flipped over and caught fire. Passenger Amy Bartolotta was ejected from the vehicle and died at a local hospital.
